Mary Jane Cheek Van Zandt

Mary Jane Cheek Van Zandt passed away on January 30, 2024, in Ruston, following a lengthy battle with complications from diabetes.

She was born and raised in Dallas on April 9, 1952, the daughter of Dr. J. Harold and Anna Lou Cheek.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Van Zandt; sisters, Lynn Cheek Newsom (Kirk Newsom), Jenny Cheek ( Larry Harley), and Macy Cheek Chionsini; two nephews, Chris Newsom and J.T. Maroney; and one niece, Julianna Miele.

She was a graduate of Hillcrest High School in Dallas. Mary Jane moved to Ruston, there meeting the love of her life, Bruce Van Zandt. They enjoyed a marriage of over 30 years. She enjoyed a 20-plus year career at Lincoln General Hospital working alongside so many who became dear and close friends.

Her love of painting, stained glass, and mixed media artwork was surpassed only by her love for animals, and in particular her sweet dog Tucker.

Mary Jane’s life was extended for over 18 years as a result of her sister Lynn’s donation of a kidney, as well as the support and love from all her sisters and dear friends.

Mary Jane will be forever remembered for her infectious smile and genuine warm-hearted love for anyone and everyone. In her final years she was blessed with the presence of an angel and extraordinary caregiver.

A private memorial of her life will be celebrated with family at a later date.
