Mother Nature can do some strange things. She can send us enough heat in August to make us think we’re in the Sahara Desert. She can send us a drought as serious as folks are experiencing now in California; she can drench us with floods that virtually cover lakeside homes and wash out bridges on country roads.
When it was announced early last year that a season on black bears had been set for this past December, the announcement was met with mixed results. Some thought it’s a shame for anyone to shoot a bear; we needed to have more of these special animals in our state.
Much has been written about the resurgence of the black bear population in Louisiana and in a lot of parishes in north and northeast Louisiana, landowners, hunters, campers and outdoors enthusiasts can attest to that fact.

We’ve tossed out the old calendar and replaced it with a shiny new 2025 model. Does this mean that we can forget hunting until this fall and winter? Not by a long shot. There’s still plenty to do outdoors; ducks season is still going on, deer will be legal game for awhile as will rabbits and quail.
My outdoors experiences began before I was old enough to handle a fishing rod or even a BB gun. I was fortunate to have a dad who was an outdoors- oriented person. My dad was a career employee of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and he took my brother and me on outings not only related to his job but also on fishing and hunting trips.

The first Louisiana black bear hunting season in more than 35 years successfully concluded last Sunday (Dec. 22) and included a 696-pound adult male bear harvested by Louisiana military veteran and Purple Heart recipient Deron Santiny, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced.
