Rep. Rob Shadoin said Saturday he’s willing to renew a portion of an existing temporary penny state sales tax in effort to avoid the full blow of the roughly $643 million shortfall Louisiana faces when the tax expires June 30. Higher education, rural health care and the bulk of state government hangs in the balance of what lawmakers do with the temporary tax during the special legislative session that starts Tuesday. “We’re going to have some severe cuts if we do not raise all, or a substantial part, of the shortfall that the Revenue Estimating Council gives us, and that’s the $643 million,”...
