Velina Jane McCullough

Velina Jane McCullough was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She left this world on May 20, 2021.

She was born on August 22, 1953, to Kenneth “Jake” and Nellwyn Martin in Ruston. After graduating high school at Bethel Christian School in 1972 she married the love of her life, Denvel D. McCullough, Sr. in June of that year and they went on to raise five children together.

Velina adored her children, grandchildren and fur babies. They were her pride and joy and she loved talking on the phone, texting, and cooking big delicious meals for family get-togethers. Velina is famous in the family for her chicken spaghetti and tuna salad.

She also enjoyed her Facebook family where she was known as the Exclamation Point Lady. She was a lifelong member of the Ruston Church of God where she played the piano and organ for over 50 years. Velina spent 15 years ensuring that the concession stand at Cedar Creek High School was top notch for all of its customers. She was an avid gardener and adored growing and caring for colorful flowers and plants of all sorts.

Velina was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, George and Nancy Stephenson; step-grandmother, Janie Stephenson; paternal grandparents, Elmer and Estelle Martin; her father, Kenneth “Jake” Martin; and sister, Vanieca Martin.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 49 years Denvel D McCullough Sr. of Ruston; children, Denvel D McCullough, Jr. and wife Estelle of Columbus, Ohio, Lori McCullough of Ruston, Sam McCullough and wife Jenni of Belcher, Jared McCullough and wife Katie of Virginia Beach, Va., Sarah McCullough of Ruston; mother, Nellwyn Martin of Ruston; and sister, Ranee Bruce of Lexington, Ky.

She is also survived by her many grandchildren, Sean, Amara, Nick, Gavin, Emily, Denvel, Aiden, Hannah, and Caroline.

Funeral services will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, on Monday, May 31, 2021, at 11 am. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at Redwing Cemetery in Oak Grove.

A visitation service for the family will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2021, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, from 5-7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Sean Palmer, Nick Palmer, Amara McCullough, Gavin McCullough, Aiden McCullough, Brandon Dente.
