Stephen Heard Hammons

Stephen Heard Hammons, 85, of Ruston, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, July 2, 2022.

Mr. Hammons was born in Dubach, son of the late John and Blanche Hammons. His strong community and family ties made north Louisiana the area he always considered home — even when working or attending school in other parts of the state.

Mr. Hammons graduated from Dubach High School before going on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Louisiana College, followed by a Master’s Degree from Tulane University.

He dedicated over 30 years of life to teaching and guiding students during his educational career. Among his numerous educational leadership positions, Mr. Hammons most notably served as principal of Cedar Creek School in Ruston from 1971 until 1986. After retiring from education, he continued working as a member of the Clinton Agency of Ruston for over 20 years.

He supported his community as a longtime member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Ruston in addition to serving one term as Mayor of Dubach.

Mr. Hammons was devoted to his church and family throughout his life. He loved this country and spent time each year exploring its vast territories and photographing its national parks.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Velma D’Angelo Hammons of Ruston; a son, David Hammons and wife Donna of Ruston; a daughter, Stephenie Hammons Howard and husband Dennis of Houston, Texas; and granddaughters, Morgan Hammons Sulkowski and Meagan Hammons Leedy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Blanche Hammons; his sister, Devonne Fussell; and son, Stephen Hammons, Jr.

Visitation for Mr. Hammons will be held Saturday, July 9, 2022, from 9-11 a.m. at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. A small family graveside service will follow at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach with Pastor Walt Brown presiding.

Pallbearers for the service will be David Hammons, Jimmy Hammons, Luther Hammons (Honorary), Dennis Howard, Gene Colvin (Honorary), and Larry Clinton.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.kilpatrickfuneralhomes.com.
