Joe ‘Allen’ Young

Joe “Allen” Young, age 80, was called into eternal rest with Our Lord and Savior on Monday, October 10, 2022, at Alpine Nursing Home in Ruston.

The funeral service, honoring the life of Allen, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Rocky Springs Baptist Church, 423 Rocky Springs Road in Homer. Officiating the service will be Pastor Kirk Jones.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, 209 N Bonner St., in Ruston.

Allen was born in Lisbon, Louisiana, on November 18, 1941, to Reginald Dresden Young and Mamie Ruth Lowrey Young. As the fourth child in a family of six children, Allen grew up in the country learning how to hunt and fish, a passion he continued into his adult years. In his youth, he also learned how to fix just about anything. He once said it was out of necessity that he learned those skills, but most of us believe he was just born with good old- fashioned “ knowhow.”

He was a graduate of Lisbon High School (1959) and later attended McNeese State in Lake Charles. He made many lifelong friends as an employee at South Central Bell of Ruston, and later retired from AT&T with 30- plus years of service.

After retirement, you could find Allen helping family members in a multitude of ways. His skills varied from something as small as repairing a washer or dryer to rebuilding an automobile engine. He could lay concrete, do a remodel of any sort or simply build a house. He was amazing, and his workmanship was second to none! And if he wasn’t helping someone else, you might find him on the lake or in a deer stand.

Allen loved the Lord and his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Nolen “Bud” Young and Sidney Young; his sister, Gerry Aycock; his nephew, Kenneth Aycock, and his beloved wife, Anita. He looked forward to a joyous reunion in Heaven.

He is survived by his brother, Stephen Young of Ringgold; sister, Sue Jones (Richard) of Ruston; his loving children, Scott Young (Sandy) of Athens, Aaron Young (Janel) of Simsboro, Kelly Vermeulen (Jim) of Hickory Creek, Texas, and Holly Elton (James) of Simsboro; his grandchildren, James Elledge, Phillip Gilreath, Will Young, Jasen Young, Robert Young, Allen Elton, Samantha Vermeulen, Jacob Vermeulen, Kayla Elton, Jesse Young, Jon Young, and Jed Young; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Honoring Allen, pallbearers will be Scott Young, Aaron Young, Will Young, Allen Elton, Jacob Vermeulen and Jesse Young.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Allen’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org).
