Brenda Gaye Hammons

On March 5, 2022, Brenda Gaye Hammons passed away peacefully at the age of 61 in Shreveport after a lengthy illness.

Gaye was born on February 13, 1961, in Ruston, to Raymon Dalton (Doc) and Celestine “Miss Pete” Edmiston Hammons.

After graduating from Ruston High School in 1979, she completed her undergraduate degree at Louisiana Tech University. She worked in medical records with businesses and medical providers in Ruston, Minden, Shreveport and Bossier City.

Among the things that brought Gaye joy were reading a really good book, laughing loudly with friends, painting luminous landscapes, photographing nature (especially sunflowers), spending time with her numerous adopted pets over the years, watching Patrick Swayze dance, Christmas family gatherings, daily phone calls with her sister, and traveling to New Mexico to visit friends and watch sunsets.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymon and Celestine Hammons; nephew, Paul Hammons; and niece, Wendy Hammons Turpin.

She is survived by her longtime best friend, Mary Marston, of Shreveport; brothers, Johnny Hammons (Lynda) of Prairieville and Bobby Hammons (Betty) of Pea Ridge; sister, Jackie Hammons Haynes (David) of West Monroe; numerous wonderful loving nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews; a host of friends; and her canine companion Tootsie.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 26, from 2-4 p.m., at Emmanuel Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Ruston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gaye’s name to the charity of your choice.
