Today is Pearl Harbor Day. My mother never told me much about Pearl Harbor. Not that she didn’t remember that Sunday morning; she did. She was 13 years old.

Mostly what Mama told me was how afraid everyone was, how my grandfather would listen to the radio far into the night for updates from the warfront, and how, over the years that would follow, everybody saved string and aluminum foil.

My grandmother never stopped saving those things, even long after World War II ended.
