After months of planning and preparing, the Lincoln Parish Library will finally be able to share one of their biggest projects with the public.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, the library will host the opening ceremony for the Smithsonian traveling exhibit “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shaped America” at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center.

While the Smithsonian will share the history of sports within in the United States, the library staff has set up an accompanying exhibit that puts the spotlight on local athletes.

With help from the public, the library staff was able to gather sports memorabilia from around the parish to display for visitors. More than 100 items will be available to view.

“Nothing brings about a response quite like local sports, and Lincoln Parish has the honor of being the home to some of the most amazing sports personalities in the history of our country,” Sarah Creekmore, administrative assistant for the library, said.

“That is why we are so excited to take part in the Smithsonian’s Museum on Mainstreet exhibition series to bring Hometown Teams to our local sports fans.”

The exhibit will be at the library until Sept. 24. During that time, there will be sports-related programs such as a panel of local athletes who will discuss their stories.

At 6 p.m. Aug. 30, longtime Ruston Leader sports editor O.K. “Buddy” Davis will share his stories.

“We will have several local sports personalities from some of baseball’s greats, including George Stone, Coach Wilbert Ellis, Wayne Causey and Ben Williams,” Creekmore said.

The display of local memorabilia will show residents the history of sports in Lincoln Parish, as well as displays from the Smithsonian itself on the importance of sports in America, she said.

“’Hometown Teams’ is an exhibit created by the Smithsonian Institute, and brought to us by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities,” Nick Davis, staff librarian said.

“The local sports memorabilia (are) items in the local community that represent Lincoln Parish’s sports history,” he said.

“This will show why we are unique and why our parish matters sports-wise.”
