This summer, the Lincoln Parish Library will host a traveling Smithsonian exhibit called “Hometown Teams.”

The Smithsonian exhibit will feature sports from around the country, but in order to make the exhibit a success in Lincoln Parish the library needs the help of area residents.

The library is looking for team jerseys, helmets, signed balls, baseball cards, photos, riding equipment, trophies, shoes, etc., anything that can help make the exhibit the best it can be for the public.

All items will be kept in locked display cases and when the Smithsonian portion of exhibit moves on, all local items will be returned to their owners shortly after exhibit ends Sept. 24.
This exhibit is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for residents to contribute to the history of our community.

With each loan of a jersey or photo, the exhibit grows to include our neighbors and friends.
According to the Smithsonian website, the exhibit captures the essence of being a member of a local team as well as the excitement of watching from the stands.

“Sports are an indelible part of our culture and community. For well over 100 years sports have reflected the trials and triumphs of the American experience and helped shape our national character,” the website states. “ Whether it’s professional sports, or those played on the collegiate or scholastic level, amateur sports or sports played by kids on the local playground, the plain fact is sports are everywhere in America. Our love of sports begins in our hometowns —on the sandlot, at the local ball field, in the street, even. Americans play sports everywhere. We play pick-up games and organized league games.”

The Ruston Daily Leader encourages residents to take a look in their attic or on their shelves, and consider sharing some of our local sports history with the rest of the world.

While the bulk exhibit will travel on after its time in our community is done, the memories made from reliving sports in Lincoln Parish through gracious donations will continue for generations.
