Seventy-five sixth through eighth grade Dubach School students will attend Ruston School District Schools beginning in 2016-17 school year.

Roughly 25 to 30 sixth grade students will attend I.A. Lewis Elementary, while the remaining seventh and eighth grade students will attend Ruston Junior High.

Lincoln Parish School Superintendent Mike Milstead said nine to 10 Dubach School teachers teach the 75 students.

Milstead said the move will help financially — saving $600,000 annually — and continue to meet state requirements.

“An executive committee from the school board thought it was within the superintendents right to make the grade changes,” he said.

The nine to 10 Dubach schoolteachers will help fill up vacant spots in remaining school district positions.

“We can reduce the number of teachers and save the taxpayers money,” he said. “This also benefits the students in a number of ways.”

Milstead said the move will help students adjust to attending bigger schools and prepare them to play in high school athletics.

“Students who attend high school without prior sports or club experience may find it difficult to adjust to start playing ball or attending after school activities their freshmen year.”

In order for Dubach children to attend after school activities, a bus will pick up students after the after school activities completions and return students back to Dubach.

Dubach School will still be a viable pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school and will continue to be in the future.

“I see the area growing in 10 years and I surely wouldn’t want my pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students to travel on a bus to Ruston for school every day,” he said. “It makes sense to continue providing the school.”
