Betty Rai Grappe Hohlt Watson, 89, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016, at Heritage Manor Stratmore after a very lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Family graveside services will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Forest Park East Cemetery at 11:30 am. A memorial service celebrating her life will follow at Broadmoor United Methodist Church Chapel at 1:00 pm with Dr. Greg Davis officiating. Family visitation will follow.

Betty was a native of Campti, LA. She was born on September 28, 1926 to Lola Goodson Grappe and Elbert Buford Grappe. She moved to Shreveport where she has resided since the age of 17. Betty married Herbert F. Hohlt in 1948 and raised three children. She married Clayton B. Watson, Sr. in July of 1971. She was very active in the community and civic affairs. She held lifetime memberships to The Shreveport Opera Guild, The Shreveport Symphony Guild, The Women’s Department Club, and Shreveport Little Theater. Betty was also active on the YWCA board and The Highland Hospital Volunteers. She and Clayton enjoyed their many travels throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, and Australia.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 19 years, Herbert F. Hohlt, Sr.; her parents and three brothers, Buford Grappe, Edward Grappe, and Curtis Grappe; her husband of 33 years, Clayton B. Watson, Sr., stepson, Clayton B. Watson, Jr.; grandson, Ryan Lanius, and granddaughter, Michelle Heil.

Betty leaves to cherish her memory, her children Sandra Githens (Rick), Karen Lanius, and Herbert F. (Rick) Hohlt, Jr. (Jamie), stepdaughter, Candace Byrne (Tommy); daughter-in-law, Charlotte Watson; grandchildren, Matt Githens, Ross Githens (Jennifer), Lori Lanius Dye (Rick), Adam Hohlt, Leslie Hohlt, Ginny Watson Ramey, Angela Hagan, Lisa Hill; and 12 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Matt Githens, Ross Githens, Adam Hohlt, Ted Grappe, and Milton Pearce.

The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Heritage Manor Stratmore and Hospice of Shreveport/Bossier. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America in Betty’s honor.
