A growing trend of new retail stores in downtown Ruston sparked an idea for one local fashion entrepreneur.

The Fashion of Ruston owner Kelly Hogan said she envisioned a way to have all the local retail talent together to display their newest designs, create sales and have a good time while doing it.

“There are a lot of local markets around the downtown area that have people with tons of talent waiting to be seen,” Hogan said.

“And with the downtown area growing by the year, we wanted to have a way of showing their talents and network with the different stores.”

With the help of the area retail stores, Hogan created Ruston’s first fashion week.

More than 35 local retail stores throughout this week are hosting sales, fashion shows and giving free samples throughout the Ruston area.

Some stores are even contributing a percentage of their sales to charity.

The week started Monday and will finish on Saturday with Football and Fashion for 5 p.m. at Railroad Park.

Football and Fashion is a tailgate with downtown merchants joined by the Louisiana Tech University cheerleaders and Regal Blues with a pep rally.

The Tech and University of Texas at San Antonio game will be televised for everyone to watch.

With the growing market in the downtown area, the Ruston Daily Leader feels the Fashion Week of Ruston will follow Hogan’s goals.

With the two local universities in the area and a growing market for clothing in the Lincoln Parish community, a Fashion Week is the perfect response to showing what all Lincoln Parish has to offer.

“And that’s our ultimate purpose,” Hogan said. “We just want to show what the community has to offer and see what we can work with in the downtown area.

“The potential that part of town has is growing by the day and our hope is that we continue to put on the Fashion Week every year and spark more events in the future for our downtown area.”
