There are 6.8 billion cell-phone subscriptions, which is almost as many as the 7 billion people in the world, according to Quartz.com. It took just a little more than 20 years for this to happen. There were 96 cell-phone service subscriptions for every 100 people in the world last year.

Since the invention of the smartphone, which can make phone calls, store your music, snap photos, record videos and browse the Internet, the world has seen a steady increase of mobile phone usage. There are 5 billion mobile phones in the world with 1.08 billion people owning a smartphone.
