Cub Scouts Pack 45 held its annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday at the Ruston Parks and Recreation Gym. The Thunderbird District Pinewood Derby followed later in the day. Cub Scouts, with the help of an adult, built their own cars using a kit consisting of a solid block of pine, plastic wheels and metal nails as axles.

The idea behind the Pinewood Derby is for a parent or guardian to spend quality time helping the boy design, carve, paint, add weights and tune the final car. The derby was first run in 1953 and continues today throughout the Boy Scouts of America organization.
