Ex-GSU star Garrett dies


GRAMBLING — J.D. Garrett, regarded as one of the top running backs in Grambling State University history, passed away Wednesday night in his hometown of Natchitoches.

He was 74.

A three-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference fullback and a Black College All-American in 1962, Garrett died while at the city pool in Natchitoches where he had worked since he was a teenager. The Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office determined the death to be of natural causes.
