Student named as National Merit finalist

A Cedar Creek School senior is one step closer to being named one of the 7,500 National Merit Scholarship finalists that will see her split more than $32 million worth of scholarship opportunities.
Carlie Toliver, 17, was announced as one of 15,000 students selected by the National Merit Scholarship program to have finalist standing.
In order for a student to receive a finalist standing, a student must have “proven academic success, school and community activity participation and exceptional leadership abilities.”

A celebration of life service for Jonn Reeve Bruce, 59, will be held at the Ruston Church of God, 407 Vernon Street, on February 17, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Larry Roy, Dr. Gary Patton and Dr. Lori-Salierno-Maldonado will be officiating.
Jonn was born March 26, 1958, in Radford, Virginia and passed away on February 2, 2018, in Lexington, Kentucky, after a brief illness.

Remember to R.S.V.P. to parties, turn on your blinker

Have you ever invited people over for a meeting at your home?
How about a little get together?
Or a huge party?
What about a group over to watch the Super Bowl?
Did you send out a cute little invitation?
Did it say “R.S.V.P.” or “Regrets only?”
Did anyone respond?
This is absolutely the number one top complaint I regularly hear.
Here’s the problem. People are aggravated when it happens to them, but then they turn around and do the exact same thing.
The thing is you probably already have their number in your cell phone.

Jackson Parish families learn about healthy choices

Families at Jonesboro Hodge Elementary School learned the importance of healthy lifestyles through an innovative program, Family Nutrition Night, sponsored by the LSU AgCenter.
Participants gathered in the gym where they were welcomed by Katie Seymore. As part of my duties with the LSU AgCenter, I asked students to share their school garden experience. Parents and their children then took a trip through five interactive stations. These hands-on stations taught kids and their parents to investigate components of nutrition. In the stations:

GSU athletics commended for seminar

How many times have you seen professional athletes end up bankrupt and broke no long after their playing careers end?
According to Time magazine, boxer Mike Tyson, basketball players Allen Iverson, Antoine Walker and Cheryl Swopes, soccer player Diego Maradona, baseball player Lenny Dykstra, hockey player Darren McCarty, figure skater Dorothy Hamill, and football players Michael Vick and Terrell Owens are all former pro athletes who filed for bankruptcy.
