Starkova, doubles team net victories at Wichita St.

WICHITA, Kansas — Louisiana Tech claimed wins at the top two singles spots but fell to No. 55 ranked Wichita State, 5-2, in the 2015 spring season opener on Friday evening at the Wichita Country Club.
“We took a lot of positives from today’s match,” head coach Chad Camper said. “Alexandra (Starkova) was as mentally strong as I have ever seen her and Jazmin (Britos) dug deep to pick up a great win. We learned a lot from our doubles and we look forward to getting better each match going forward.”

Grambling State teams to play at Prairie View A&M today

Grambling State University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will play a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Prairie View A&M today in Texas. The womens’ game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. while the men’s game will follow around 7:45 p.m. A’Torri Shine (pictured shooting the ball in the top photo) leads the Tigers (2-13, 0-5 SWAC) in scoring with 11.9 points per game while Yosha Watson (No. 24 pictured in bottom photo) is the Lady Tigers (5-11, 2-3 SWAC) top scorer with 10.9 ppg.

Stalking: Serious, pervasive, lethal

In today’s culture, “stalking” is a term that is tossed about fairly freely, often in a joking manner. My own daughters have kidded me about “Facebook stalking” them, just because I viewed a few of their pictures and made comments. (For heaven’s sake! I’m a mother! Of course I am going to look at their Facebook pages!)

Actors preparing for play

Rehearsals for the Ruston Community Theatre production of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” adapted from the award-winning novel, are well under way. Pictured are cast members Ginger Johnson (Scout), Tracy Calloway (Atticus) and Donovan Turpin (Jem) practicing for the play.
Performances will open March 5 at The Dixie Center for the Arts in Ruston. This production is sponsored by The Law Offices of Woodard and Clement.

Club News: Literra Club

The Littera Club met Jan. 7 in the home of Edith Hawkins. Edith greeted members as Jean Lay served Seven Layer Squares with a choice of either chocolate or lemon filling. Coffee and nuts complemented the presentation.
President Teri Fulton thanked hostesses Hawkins, Lay and Joyce Sutton. She gave Hawkins a special thanks for graciously allowing the meeting to be moved to her home since the original hostess was ill.

Tech group, student earn national awards

Louisiana Tech University’s chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students was honored recently with two of the seven national Honor Awards presented at the 2014 AIAS Forum in Nashville, Tennessee.
Samantha Raburn, who received her master’s degree in architecture from Tech in 2014, was awarded the Chapter President of the Year award, recognizing one of over 180 chapter presidents for his or her outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the consistent growth and development of the AIAS at his or her school.
