Most people have never won something sitting on a toilet, but this month could be someone’s chance to become a champion.
The 2011 Outhouse Grand Nationals are slated for take off at 4 p.m. Sept. 24 on Elm Street in Choudrant. The event is a soapbox derby style race featuring outhouses — complete with a toilet bowl as the seat — as the racecars.

Qualifying began today for local and state-level elections set for Oct. 22.
As of press time today, those who had qualified to run for Lincoln Parish Police Jury spots included Democrat Theresa Wyatt, District 1; Democrat Hazel Hunter, District 2; Democrats Bobby Bennett and Woodard Christian, District 3; Republican David Hammons, District 5; Democrat Roy Glover, District 6; Democrat Troy Smalling, District 7; Republican Skip Russell, District 8; Independent Joe Henderson, District 9; and Democrat Nancy Wilson, District 10.

A Simsboro woman is in jail following a report of a shooting in Grambling.
Shanetra Lajoyce Baker, 22, of 250 Jackson Road No. 2, was arrested just before 10 p.m. Sunday on a charge of aggravated second degree battery.
According to the arrest affidavit, an officer with Grambling Police Department on Sunday responded to a call of a shooting in front of Grambling Town Hall. The officer made contact with the victim, who reportedly accused the suspect of driving by and shooting him in his left arm.

Green Clinic and Green Clinic Surgical Hospital are teaming up with the City of Ruston and Louisiana Tech Athletics to host a community pep rally at Railroad Park as the Bulldogs get set to open the home season against the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Saturday.

Louisiana Tech University football fans will have plenty of opportunities for tailgating during the 2011 season, as the Bulldogs host five big home games at Joe Aillet Stadium.
Director of Special Events Bill Graham has set the menus for this year’s tailgating action and various groups of Tech student-athletes will comprise the judging panel for each and every weekend.
Prizes will be awarded for the largest group, best prepared food and best decorations.

What happened to summertime? I often go on a picnic and go fishing but this year I didn’t do anything like that. I didn’t soak one cricket. It was just too hot all summer long.
