Local students not affected by upcoming changes

Lincoln Parish students will not presently be impacted by the Board of Regents recent decision on how high school students can earn college credit through dual enrollment courses.
Lincoln Parish schools Superintendent Mike Milstead said in an email statement that the local school district’s dual enrollment classes are taught through Louisiana Tech University, which already has higher standards than those the Board of Regents want to implement.

State tweaks dual enrollment courses

Board of Regents OKs new standards

BATON ROUGE (AP) — New rules will govern how high school students can earn college credit through dual enrollment courses.
The Advocate reported the Louisiana Board of Regents approved the new standards Monday.
Dual enrollment courses are supposed to mirror the classes taken by college students.
But higher education officials questioned whether the courses were rigorous enough.
Under one change, dual enrollment instructors who are not college faculty will have to receive training from the college on how to teach and grade the course.

Chamber banquet nominations deadline set for today

Today is the deadline to submit nominations for the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s 98th annual awards banquet scheduled for Jan 16.
Award nominations still up for grabs are the Robert E. Russ Award, Young Business Leader of the Year Award, Rotary’s Bill Best Humanitarian Award and Junior Auxiliary’s Betty Robbins Volunteer of the Year Award.
The Robert E. Russ Award, named after the founder of Ruston, recognizes one individual for outstanding contributions to the Ruston-Lincoln Parish business community or overall economic development of the area.

‘First in the state:’ NLMC installs Infant Safety System

The Northern Louisiana Medical Center became the first hospital in the state to install the new and innovative Infant Safety System developed by CertaScan Technologies, according to a press release from the hospital.
“The proprietary system allows the hospital to capture high resolution newborn footprints which can be used for precise identification in situations like an abduction, lost baby or natural disaster,” Shonda Gray, director of the Women’s Center, said.
