Buddy's Blog: Sokol, Williams have made big difference

Another regular season is in the books for the football programs at Lincoln Parish’s two universities.
And what an enjoyable 2014 campaign it’s been for Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State University.
It’s not over just yet for the Bulldogs, who played at Marshall University Saturday for the Conference USA championship and are scheduled to receive a bowl berth, probably today.
Tech finished the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and 7-1 West Division crown in the conference.

The Louisiana Tech defensive pressure cranked up a few extra notches Saturday night, forcing 22 Jackson State turnovers that helped lead to a 65-52 victory by the Bulldogs in front of 4,038 fans in the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech (7-1) scored 32 points off of those turnovers in picking up its sixth straight victory and its 18th straight in the TAC.

G-Men shoot down Selma

Junior forward Mark Gray (24) scored 12 points while A’Torri Shine added a game-high 28 to lead Grambling State to a 74-64 victory over Selma University Saturday night at the Frederick C. Hodby Assembly Center. The Tigers now stand at 2-5 on the season.

Lady Tigers top NSU

Freshman guard Bre’Nae Andrews (13) led the way with nine points Saturday as Grambling State held on for a 44-41 win at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center in Grambling. The victory pushed the Lady Tigers to 3-5 on the season while Northwestern State fell to 4-3.

Runoff decides elected officials

Polls opened at 7 a.m. Saturday to allow voters the chance to decide on multiple seats that entered into a runoff election after the Nov. 4 primary.
3rd Judicial Judge
Ruston attorneys Lewis Jones and Tommy Rogers were vying for the Division B seat now held by retiring Judge Wayne Smith. The 3rd Judicial District is Lincoln and Union parishes.
Unofficial election results indicate Rogers, a Republican, as the victor with 51.86 percent. Jones brought in 48.04 percent.
The unofficial numbers indicated the winning margin of votes between the two candidates to be 731.

12 Days of Christmas begins

Alan Brown, Robert Flowers and Jean McWeeney, left to right, visited during the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau Annual Open House, which this year served as the kick off for the 12 Days of Christmas Shopping in Lincoln Parish campaign. Residents can stop by the Chamber/CVB office or at one of 40 businesses in the parish to get a playing card for this holiday event. Residents who visit all 40 businesses will be eligible to win a $1,000 prize. Those who visit at least 10 will be eligible for various stocking stuffer gifts.

Cassidy defeats Landrieu

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy has defeated Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, denying her a fourth term and extending the GOP's domination of the 2014 midterm elections that put Republicans in charge of Capitol Hill for the final two years of President Barack Obama's tenure.

Abraham upsets Mayo

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Republicans held on to two congressional seats in Louisiana on Saturday in runoff elections that marked the end of an improbable comeback try by former Democratic Gov. Edwin Edwards, who sought to overcome the stigma of having spent more than eight years in prison in a conservative, GOP-leaning district.
Edwards, 87, lost the Baton Rouge area's 6th District to Garret Graves, a Republican who most recently served as Gov. Bobby Jindal's coastal restoration chief.

Multiple agencies respond

At approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday, multiple emergency response agencies were called out to the corner of Beacon Light and Chatham Road in reference to a house fire.
Reports from the scene indicated the house was not occupied at the time of the fire and the cause of the fire is unknown.
Responding to the scene were the Ruston Fire Department-EMS, Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1, Choudrant Fire Department, Ruston Police Department and the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office.
