Health care big part of investment portfolio

in
Conville, Bobby 2014.jpg

Health care makes up roughly 18 percent of the U.S. economy and is expected to grow 5.6 percent per year through 2025. In fact, experts anticipate ongoing expansion in this sector no matter what happens with the broader economy — thanks at least in part to the millions of aging baby boomers.
“One of the things we jokingly say about health care is, ‘Whether or not there’s a recession, people still sneeze,’” said Michael Colón, First Vice President and Equity Sector Analyst with Wells Fargo Advisors.

Lessons about money can be priceless gifts to children

in
Halbrook, Andy 2016.jpg

Father’s Day is almost upon us.
If you’re a dad, you certainly may enjoy getting cards and gifts, of course.
But, over time, you will gain even greater satisfaction by what you can give your children.
Examples such as some valuable financial lessons.
These lessons can include the following:
• Setting goals — If you are contributing to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, explain how you build these accounts now, while you are working, so you’ll have enough money to enjoy a comfortable retirement someday.

Larry Wright: An honor-filled playing career

Davis, Buddy 2015.jpg

For Larry Wright, this is the problem — where to put all of his awards won during a highly successful career.
From high school and college to the pro ranks, both inside and outside the U.S., now add yet another honor.
He’s one of the inductees in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame class for this year.
“It’s very special for lot of reasons,” Wright said. “Special because of what Bob Hopkins, Bob Piper and Fred Hobdy meant while I was at Grambling.”
Piper was an athletics director and Hopkins and Hobdy were Wright’s coaches.
“It was special,” Wright said about his Tigers’ career.

Five final-round birdies spark Southern Jr. Golf title
sports 3.jpg

CHOUDRANT — Shreveport’s Charlie Flynn was flying high Friday afternoon thanks to some help from a handful of birdies.
After shooting even par on the front half, Flynn fired in four birdies on Squire Creek Country Club’s back nine to capture the Southern Golf Association’s 46th Southern Junior Championship.
“It was fun,” Flynn said about the tournament’s final day. “I stayed steady. I made a bogey (Hole 7) on the front nine but also made a birdie (Hole 2) to go even on the front half. I knew I needed some birdies on the back half and was fortunate to make that happen.”

There will be plenty of Lincoln Parish flavor in the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions 2018 induction class.
Former Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech standout George Stone, who pitched for the New York Mets in the 1973 Worrld Series, will be joined by Grambling basketball Kodak All-American Kenny Simpson and another RHS graduate, the late Don Shows, as three of this year’s inductees.
Former Tech athletics director and ex-LSU head football coach Jerry Stovall and Haynesville star and 10-year NFL veteran Demetric Evans, will be the other two inductees.

Jury still out on late turkey-season opening

in
sports 1.jpg

I ran into a friend at the post office one recent morning and he asked me how my turkey season had gone. “I figure not so well since you haven’t written anything about how you did,” he said.
He’s right; I hunted on my Jackson Parish club and never heard a gobble so I figured it best to do like my mama always taught me … “If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything.”
Although my season was a bust, I heard from lots of other hunters who heard gobbling and limited out. Maybe the problem is me and my lack of expertise in making turkeys talk.
