Early voting sets mid-term record

in

An apparent record number of Lincoln Parish voters cast early ballots ahead of next week’s mid-term election.
Some 2,871 voters voted in person as of the close of the early voting Tuesday evening, parish Registrar of Voters Dianna Stone said today. The number is the largest midterm early voting turnout in 18 years, Stone said.
The tally doesn’t include the several hundred mail ballots that have come in thus far, she said.

Severe thunderstorms expected tonight

It’s going to be a spooky night.
But the scariest weather may not roll into the parish until several hours after dark, according to National Weather Service forecasts. As of this morning, the southeast corner of Lincoln Parish was placed under an elevated risk for tornados.
That’s the same area that was hit by an F2 tornado in May.
The entire parish remains under an enhanced risk for severe weather, with the greatest threat late this afternoon and possibly into the early hours of Thursday morning, Kip Franklin, parish director of homeland security and emergency preparedness, said.

Trump stokes pre-election fear of immigrants to drive voters

in

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of U.S. troops to stop an “invasion” of migrants. Tent cities for asylum seekers. An end to the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship.
With his eyes squarely on next Tuesday’s elections, President Donald Trump is rushing out hardline immigration declarations, promises and actions as he tries to mobilize supporters to retain Republican control of Congress. His own campaign in 2016 concentrated on border fears, and that’s his final-week focus in the midterm fight.

U.S. troops at the border limited in what they can do

in

PHOENIX (AP) — The more than 5,200 active-duty troops being sent by President Donald Trump to the U.S.-Mexico border will be limited in what they can do under a federal law that restricts the military from engaging in law enforcement on American soil.
That means the troops will not be allowed to detain immigrants, seize drugs from smugglers or have any direct involvement in stopping a migrant caravan that is still about 1,000 miles from the nearest border crossing.

On the heels of a convincing win against Delta Charter, Cedar Creek (4-5) plans on forcing Oak Grove (9-0) to prove deserving of its undefeated record.
The Cougars utilized a steady diet of sophomore running back Lane Blue and a 21-point opening quarter to defeat the Delta Charter Storm (2-7) in last week’s 41-20 victory.
“I think it was one of the most efficient games we’ve played all season,” Cedar Creek offensive coordinator Charles Scott said.

GRAMBLING — Lincoln Preparatory School head football coach Glen Hall knew heading into the season that his Panthers were facing an uphill battle.
After all, when it kicked off the season the team had two juniors and two sophomores with the rest of the team consisting of freshmen and eighth graders.
The resulting growing pains have left the Panthers with a 1-8 record (1-4 in District 1-1A) heading into their season finale at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eddie G. Robinson Stadium on the Grambling State University campus.
