A free Value-Added Bee Products workshop will be offered on Sept. 6, at the Lincoln Parish Library in Ruston, from 6-7:30 p.m. This workshop will introduce ways to make and market bee products — even in an urban environment. Special guest speaker is Amy Weeks, Master Craftsman Beekeeper at My Favorite Honey in West Monroe. Weeks has served as past president of Hill Country Beekeepers, on the board of directors of the Louisiana Beekeepers Association, as a member of the American Apitherapy Society, and as a member of Monroe’s Herb Society. The Lincoln Parish Library is located at 910 N. Trenton St. On-site registration ( sign- in) will begin at the library at 5:15 p.m., with Johnny’s Pizza provided. The early days of a college student’s experience can be scary and daunting. The pace of learning is drastically increased, the learning curve is accelerated, and time seems to be moving at lighting speed. It is a moment where students are challenged to become criticalindependent thinkers, to look beyond self and to become doers and accountable.

The Circle, a program designed to enrich the lives of adults 50 years of age and older through health and wellness programs, held its anniversary party Thursday at the Ruston Civic Center. With the theme, “Happy Trails to You,” the Hit the Trail Band provided musical entertainment as members danced and enjoyed the festivities. The nervous system is a fascinating part of the human body that includes the brain, the spinal cord and nerves. This system controls much of what the body does, so it’s no surprise that nerve injuries can have a profound effect on individuals’ daily lives.
DEAR HARRIETTE: I serve on a community board in my city that has done a lot of good over the years. I have had many different roles, and it has been a good run. I am getting older now and want to retire. The problem is that the board is small, and its members are pressing me to stay on. I appreciate the support, but I have had health issues and know that it is time for me to step down. I spoke to the chair of the board recently, and he refused to accept my resignation.
It’s Labor Day weekend. Summer is done and school’s back in session. Yet for me, school never ends even if not necessarily in the traditional sense of education. And not surprisingly, I find some of my most valued life lessons embedded within the musical landscape.
