Allens thrive in tough economy

Debbie Allen could complain. She’s had knee surgery, is still recovering from a wicked spider bite and moved her business, all in the last seven months. But despite sleep deprivation and too many fast-food dinners, Allen, who along with husband Dennis, owns Ruston Florist and Boutique, isn’t whining.

Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards

Last Thursday night was all about recognizing some of the young athletes in the area, and it was standing room only in the McLane Multipurpose Center as Ruston Parks and Recreation hosted the inaugural Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, or ESPYs, for RPAR Night, complete with a red carpet entrance. The evening was dedicated to honoring all of the young players that participated in RPAR’s fall flag football and soccer leagues, as well as thanking RPAR’s volunteer coaches.

Zetas donate to DART

Members of the Grambling Epsilon Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. collected and donated 17 boxes and five bags of clothes, shoes and household goods to DART (Domestic Abuse Resistance Team). DART is the only emergency shelter in North Central Louisiana. It serves the residential emergency and non-residential needs of domestic violence victims in Lincoln, Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson, Union, Grant and Winn parishes. This donation supports the objectives of Zetas’ national service program Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel).

Parish swimmers at state

Twenty-two swimmers from three Lincoln Parish High Schools will be competing to be the best this week in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Swimming Championships at the SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur.
Cedar Creek and Choudrant will compete starting today and continuing through Thursday, while Ruston and West Monroe are set for competition on Friday and Saturday.

Tech prepares for parking on Saturday

Louisiana Tech University’s last home football game of the season is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Bulldogs take on the Aggies of Utah State.
The university is urging fans to turn out in large numbers for the showdown for first place in the Western Athletic Conference.
Because of both fall commencement exercises (set for 10 a.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center) and the game being held on the same day, Tech officials have announced the following information regarding parking:

’Dogs host home opener

The Thomas Assembly Center being a home court advantage for the Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team is an understatement.
Spanning the last five seasons, the Bulldogs have gone an impressive 22-0 in non-conference home games and look to continue that winning streak when they square off against the UALR Trojans tonight at 7 p.m.

RHS runners place in Top 10 at state

NATCHITOCHES — Both of Ruston High School’s cross country team finished in the Top 10 for Class 5A at the 2012 Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championships on Tuesday.
The Lady Bearcats placed No. 6 with 163 points and the Bearcats were No. 9 with 337 points.
Ruston High’s top individual finishers for the two teams was Adaiza Austin, who was No. 6 in the girls’ division with a time of 18:41.18.

Floyd (Sonny) Ellerman

A memorial service for Mr. Floyd (Sonny) Ellerman of the Douglas Community will be held at 2:30 PM Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Douglas United Methodist Church., Officiating the service will be Rev Jeremy Jones assisted by Rev. Rolly Walker. Private graveside service will be held at Douglas Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. .

Mr. Ellerman was born December 19, 1932 and passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Maude Ellerman; and sister: Christine Carpenter.

Rev. James Freeman Taylor

Funeral services for Rev. James Freeman Taylor, age 95, of Ruston, LA will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 17 at the Cross Point Church in Madison, AL. Officiating will be Rev. John Dees, the Church’s Pastor.

Rev. Taylor was born on March 21, 1917, in Phoenix City, Alabama. He went home to be with his Heavenly Father on November 12. 2012.
