RCT awards RusTonys for shows

Ruston Community Theatre RusTony Awards were presented Aug. 27 at the Dixie Center for the Arts.
This year’s celebration was the 21st and featured a long list of recipients. The awards program is held each August and is designed to recognize exceptional skills and talents in theatrical productions. Awards include cast members as well as those who work behind the scenes. This year a total of 21 awards were presented.

Preps in high gear Friday

Everything starts counting on Friday.
And there’s no need to remind head coaches in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, which kicks off its 2011 regular season on Friday night.
After last weekend’s jamboree events, schools located from Bunkie to Brusly and from West Monroe to Westgate will begin playing for keeps this weekend.

Dykes,’Dogs ready for late kickoff time

Tech making preparations for 9 p.m. start at Southern Miss

Regardless of what kickoff time might be on the board for Louisiana Tech and Southern Mississippi on Saturday, Bulldogs’ Head Coach Sonny Dykes and his staff plan to be ready.
For the record, the ’Dogs and Golden Eagles will start squaring off at 9 p.m., Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss., where the 2011 season opener will be televised live by the Fox Sports Network.

Williams, GSU prepare for Alcorn State attack

GRAMBLING — Head Coach Doug Williams and his Grambling State University staff just might have a two-fold problem in Saturday’s 2011 opener against Alcorn State.
The Braves’ team that they will be opposing in the annual “Port City Classic” at Independence Stadium features a dual mode of attack on offense.
“Knowing Melvin like I do,” said Williams about Alcorn State Head Coach and first cousin Melvin Spears, “they’re going to be throwing the football. That’s what he likes to do and they’ve got some talented players to do it with.

Weekend set for sales tax break

Residents were out in force during the recent state sales tax holiday to buy school supplies, uniforms and other items they wished to save money on. Now, hunters and others wishing to enjoy the great outdoors will have a break on their purchases.
From Friday-Sunday, residents will receive an exemption from both state and local sales tax on firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies during the third annual Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Holiday.

Pond weeds present problems

I have been receiving lots of phone calls recently about controlling weeds in ponds. The easiest way to control weeds in a pond should have started during pond construction.
But since it’s too late to discuss pond construction when I get these calls, it usually puts us on the defensive to get control of the weed problem. Also, people tend to wait and call when the pond is completely covered with weeds instead of calling when they first emerge. So for those of you thinking of building a new pond, come in and see me before you start and get some of the information that you need to construct a pond as best as possible. For those of you that already have ponds, let’s talk about aquatic weeds.

Man in jail on battery charge

A Ruston man banned from a home more than two weeks ago was arrested Sunday after allegedly visiting the residence, strangling his former wife and endangering a child.
Martin Dewayne Allen, 41, 1137 Mondy Road, was charged with domestic abuse battery by strangulation along with child endangerment, unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling and returning to the premises after being forbidden by the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Wreck on La. 33

A two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 33 near Frazier Road on Monday afternoon caused minor injuries and sent one vehicle into the woods.
According to reports from the Louisiana State Police, Stephen Turner, 55, of Ruston, was driving a 2003 Toyota Tundra when he collided with Duane Hale, 55, of El Dorado, Ark., who was driving a 2011 Ford F-150. Hale’s vehicle wound up on the side of the road with its bed in the trees, while Turner’s truck sat with damage to the passenger side.
