Turpin Orthodontics in Ruston got a jump on Independence Day with the image of Uncle Sam at the local business entrance. As a precursor to area festivities scheduled for the Fourth of July, the “Everybody Loves Breakfast” bulldog that welcomes patients to the practice donned the traditional Uncle Sam hat while sitting amidst small American flags in honor of Independence Day.
Tuesday most of us will be celebrating our nation’s 247th birthday. We will be firing up the grill, enjoying a little time with family and perhaps if the weather forecasts are correct, we may even have a respite from an oppressive heatwave that has put a drain on everyone.
Cooking over an open flame produces a unique flavor that’s difficult to match. The smoky flavor of grilled foods is hard to resist, especially on summer nights that seem tailor-made for cooking and dining outside.
In the late 1890s the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company opened an exchange in the second floor of the Judge Holstead building. Logan Arnold was manager. In 1897, the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company operated an exchange and was granted a franchise by the town in 1899. Robert Null was the first manager and Misses Eva and Ethel Robinson were early operators.
Here we are, the first week of July. The fourth will be here in a couple of days followed quickly by my birthday on the seventh. Then, summer is pretty much over. It’s just always kinda felt that way for me.
The North Central Louisiana Arts Council is excited to bring back summer arts camp, but with a twist. This year’s workshops are free thanks to a grant from Weyerhaeuser.
Things seem to slow down in summer. Come summer, the hurried pace that dominates much of the year takes a backseat to vacations, lounging around the pool, diving through ocean waves, and setting up tents at campsites near or far.
