Six months after the body of a young Black man was discovered near a Grambling State University dormitory, Louisiana State Police have released a report saying 20-year-old Haywood Reed, Jr. took his own life. Though the multipage report containing the findings is dated Aug. 10, part of the narrative indicates investigators may have suspected within hours of the March 26 incident that Reed, from Baton Rouge, died from a self-inflected gunshot wound. Yet for months, the LSP continued to say the matter was under investigation and asked Grambling city officials not to talk about it publicly. “The investigation process can take time in order to ensure a thorough investigation. Interviews, evidence analysis and anything else that the investigator needs to look at takes time,” Lt. Melissa Matey, with LSP’s public affairs section, said when asked about the length of the review.
