March is National Nutrition Month. National Nutrition Month is a good time to be more thoughtful of the foods you are fueling your body with. Are your food choices nutrient-dense foods? These foods provide vitamins, minerals, and other elements that may have positive health effects with relatively fewer calories. Nutrient dense foods do not have added sugars, added refined starches or added solid fats.
It’s a question you become strangely accustomed to when you’re diagnosed with diabetes. No matter how many times I hear it, the question still occasionally makes me a little defensive. “I’m an adult,” I think in response. Or, even better, “Should you be eating the food I see you eating?”
Though I understand that these individuals are just trying to be helfpul, it still makes me wish people understood diabetes a little better.
