Maybe it wasn’t the $300 million-plus Powerball jackpot, but Louisiana Tech University’s basketball Bulldogs punched another winning ticket of their own on Saturday night.
For the fifth consecutive game, the last year’s Western Athletic Conference postseason tournament runner-ups left a winner and this time against their rival down Interstate Highway 20.
The Bulldogs (5-1) got a 23-point effort out of guard Cordarius Johnson and 18 points from “Young Reliable” sophomore guard Raheem Appleby to pin a 68-52 defeat on the winless Warhawks (0-2).
Louisiana Tech fought back from two sets down against Southern Miss, but the Lady Techsters’ rally came a little too late with Tech eventually falling to the Golden Eagles, 3-1 (18-25, 15-25, 25-21, 17-25), in the Conference USA opener Monday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.
With Southern Miss (13-4, 1-0 C-USA) leading 2-0 in the match, Tech (6-8, 0-1 C-USA) took the 10-minute break as an opportunity to regroup in order to come back and win the third set, but the Lady Techsters fell short in the rally to give the Golden Eagles a conference road victory.
