“One day you look in a mirror and you see that maybe the solution is you,” Bernhard said.

Bernhard announced this week that Shaw, a Forbes Fortune 500 company, will not accept $172.5 million in discretionary incentives offered by the state to secure a deal that involves the company building a new plant in Lake Charles and keeping its headquarters in Baton Rouge.

Bernhard said Wednesday he does not want the company to further drain the state’s resources when it grapples with deep budget cuts to health care services and higher education.
