Eight years after her graduation, West-Brown, a mother of two, is a teaching assistant at Ruston Elementary School who is pursuing a teaching certification at Grambling State University.

West-Brown was invited to the school, along with local businessman Joseph Henderson, to provide the students with direction and motivation.

Shirley May, a business teacher at Career Academy, said most students end up at this alternative school because they are not successful in a regular school setting due to poor academic performance, truancy or behavior problems.
