My cat, Hamlet — named after one of William Shakespeare’s tragically disturbed characters — has lived with me for more than a month now. Upon a friend’s recommendation, I visited the Ruston Animal Shelter before investing money in a pet. For the $50 adoption fee, Hamlet’s first set of shots, de-worming and health check were paid for, along with his neutering, to which he’s not looking forward. Although in some ways it feels I’m robbing Hamlet of his fundamental right to be a father, my bank account tells me my house will not be home to a slew of baby kittens any time soon.
