Shelter gives aid to more than 100

As of Saturday afternoon, the shelter housed 125 evacuees, with the majority coming from Texas, said shelter manager Colleen Morgan.

“A lot of them are from Port Arthur, Orange and Beaumont, Texas,” Morgan said. “Only about 30 percent are from South Louisiana.”

Although a few evacuees trickled out of the shelter Saturday morning, Morgan said she’s expecting the rest to stick around until Monday.

Port Arthur resident Kevin Smith evacuated to the local church shelter alongside several family members. The 17-year-old clearly recalls catching wind of Ike’s landfall.
