“Police can be the first-responders, but we can’t be the only responders,” Coker said. “We need other people — mental health providers, judges and social services.”

Coker said a person in a relationship might have reason to worry if he or she cannot answer yes to the following three questions regarding a relationship:

• Can you trust this person?

• Are they committed to the relationship?

• Do they care about you as a person?
