Type 1 muscle fibers are known as red, and they provide endurance. You usually find these muscle fibers in marathon runners.

Type 2 muscle fibers, known as white, provide shorter contractions for a burst of power. This is useful if you are a weight lifter or a sprinter. Regardless of athletic specialty, everyone has a mixture of both types of muscle fibers in their bodies.
