Students free for summer
“Just keep the mind sharp,” he said. “Even if you’re not actively engaged in math, social studies or science, your retention rate is higher if you read than if you don’t read.”
For younger children, Glen View Elementary Principal Bridget Simoneaux advises blocking off 15-30 minutes to read to them every day and planning a weekly trip to the library.
“Perhaps they can join the library’s summer reading program or have a family game night,” Simoneaux said. “The students do lose a little bit of what they learn over the summer if they don’t keep reading.”
