“Battery acid will leach out of batteries, and they get run over and broken,” she said. “That also leaks into soil and creates problems for our water.”

The company contracted with industrial and environmental management company PSC, and Mize expects the waste pickup day will run between $12,000-$15,000 once collection is complete, and about 4.5 tons of waste handled.

“We won’t turn anybody away that has materials that can be disposed of,” Mize said. “It’s a staggering cost, but when you look at the amount in pounds that’s disposed of and not put in the landfill, it’s a small cost.”
