They are vital changes that strike at one of the roots of political corruption and power brokering.

The new law takes effect Saturday, but the ethics board says it doesn’t have the ability yet to deal with the reporting requirement. An effort to push the effective start date for the new law more than a year out could be seen as an effort to hamstring the changes in the law for the time being, and the Senate’s vote reaffirms the position that the Legislature is not playing games.
