Legislators back at Capitol
The annual money tug-of-war this time involves new lawmakers pushing to scale back state government, New Orleans lawmakers pushing for more hurricane recovery aid and an array of lawmakers trying to get their favored local projects into the budget.
The regular session began at noon today. It must end by June 23. Though lawmakers’ terms in office only began in January, they’ve been at the Capitol off and on since February. Jindal called a special session to strengthen the state’s ethics laws and then followed that with a second session to cut business taxes and spend a $1 billion surplus.
