Many recognize the name Martin Luther King Jr., but fewer know agricultural chemist George Washington Carver, who discovered 300 uses for peanuts and hundreds more for soybeans, pecans and sweet potatoes, and also pioneered crop rotation, an advancement that revolutionized agriculture in the South.

Other names of note include prominent poet and author Paul Lawrence Dunbar, W.E.B. DuBois, a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and Underground Railroad organizer Harriet Tubman.
