Racial divisions still exist, that much has been made clear in recent months with strife and controversy originating in our own state.

Thinking of his tragic murder — a martyr for those black and white who felt and still feel that equality is not just a pretty word — still puts us at a loss.
This holiday marks the birthday of King, and is one of only a handful of United States holidays devoted to a specific person.

King sought to forge a common ground between the races.
He wanted people from all walks to disregard color and address issues that spanned across those racial lines.
