Fewer selling minors tobacco

According to SAMHSA’s Federal Fiscal Year 2006 annual Synar reports, the national tobacco retailer violation rate dropped to 10.9 percent in 2006, down from 40.1 percent in 1997.

In Louisiana, the retailer violation rate was 6.7 percent, putting them in the bottom 10 of those who sell tobacco to minors.

Elaine Goheen, public affairs specialist for SAMSHA, said the compliance rates are determined through undercover checks. Under regulations implementing the Synar Amendment, states must report their annual retailer violation rates to SAMHSA.
