Richard Harrison "Buck" Canterbury
Richard Harrison "Buck" Canterbury of Simsboro passed away Saturday,
September 29, 2012 in Monroe, LA following a brief illness.
Buck was born April 8, 1926 in the Oak Grove Community of Lincoln Parish. Upon
graduating from Simsboro High School, Buck enlisted in the Army Air Force. As a
veteran of World War II, Buck served our country in Okinawa, and was honorably
discharged as a Sergeant after eight years of service.
Buck was a resident of Simsboro for 57 years. He served as a former town councilman and Chief of the Simsboro Fire Department. He owned and operated Magnolia Corner Grocery
Story. Following retirement, Buck worked with his family as a farmer and
cattleman, and was a member of the Lincoln Parish and Louisiana Cattlemen's
Association. Buck was a member of Saint Rest Baptist Church for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Tishie Canterbury; stepmother,
Eunice Holmes Canterbury; brother, Emery Canterbury; sisters, Leona Patterson
and Vera Mae Whitman.
Buck is survived by his wife of 62 years, Medrick Hood Canterbury; son, Keith
Canterbury and wife Jan; daughter, Tammie Canterbury Rockett;
"adopted" son, Doug Durrett; grandchildren, Clark Canterbury and wife
Angela, Will Rockett and wife Caroline, and Abby Canterbury; great-grandchildren,
Richard and Sydney Canterbury; sisters Marteal Canterbury and Laverne Ray; and
numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Buck's family was the delight of his life. He adored his children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all, but his memory will live on in
the many stories and "Buck" adventures.
Visitation will be Monday, October 1, from 5-8 p.m. at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston.
Services will be held Tuesday, October 2, at 2 p.m. at Saint Rest Baptist
Church in Dubach with Randy Ray officiating.
Pallbearers include Ronnie Patterson, Craig Whitman, Mike White, Robert Ray, Ron Whitaker,
Jake Slocum, Dan Durrett and Daniel Taylor.
Honorary Pallbearers include Ronnie Whitaker, Jr. Slocum, Donald Franklin, Barry Canterbury,
Mike Canterbury, Wayne Neuroth, Ted Polman and Bob George.
Memorials can be given to Saint Rest Cemetery Fund.
