Free concert to benefit Dixie
The era of big bands will come alive on Saturday at the Dixie Center for the Arts, as Russ-Town Jazz is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m.
Russ-Town Jazz, a community-based, all-volunteer ensemble, is made of members of the larger Russ-Town Band who have prior jazz experience.
“Our sole existence is to be a service organization, to provide concerts to keep this type of music from fading away,” said Lawrence Gibbs, director of Russ-Town Jazz. “Since the early 1990s, there has been an upsurge in these types of organizations — all volunteer organizations whose members played in high school and college, but now have their professional lives but want to continue to play music.”
