Attendance at school events and communication with teachers are a few good steps, but they should be combined with a daily effort to help a child stay on track in school. Parents who place an emphasis on education are cementing their expectations for their children’s academic success.

Ruston Elementary School Principal Sonja Walker said the most important aspect of parental involvement is it sends a message to children that parents value education.

“It’s a big hurdle if parents don’t appear to value it,” Walker said. “Their kids become behavior problems or don’t want to try as hard.”
