Juror: Parish will be broke
Police Juror Skip Russell, voiced his concerns during an interview last week about the proposed quarter-cent sales tax that Sheriff Mike Stone has added to the ballot for April 21.
The proposed sales tax is expected to generate $1.8 million in additional funds per year. Stone has previously said this will be used to cover department technology replacements and upgrades, continuation of prevention services (such as school resources officers and elderly protective services) and a $100,000 deficit from the previous fiscal year. The department’s financial statements show the deficit is in the drug task force fund, which has grown from a $19,196 deficit in 2008 to a $120,027 deficit in 2010. In 2011, the fund balance ended with $20,655.
