Education begins at home
A recent mishap had me home flat on my back. That means lots of time to stare at the television. I was flipping channels when I landed on the Hallmark Channel and a familiar sight from my youth — “The Waltons.”
Rich memories of growing up within my own family flooded my mind. An introduction to the historic television show came as our family watched the 1971 pilot movie, “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story.” So when the weekly series began in 1972, we were already hooked. Set during The Great Depression and World War II, the story of strong family bonds and a life eked out on rural Spencer’s Mountain was fascinating to me. For my parents who were children of that depression, it must have been a stark reminder of their own lives and surviving those dire times.
