Bulldogs stop ULM
An early season losing streak for Louisiana Tech University’s basketball Bulldogs is over.
Led by the season-best 19 points of freshman guard Raheem Appleby, the ’Dogs (3-4) halted their three-game losing streak with a 73-71 victory over I-20 rival Louisiana-Monroe at Fant-Ewing Coliseum Saturday night.
Tech had a six-point (72-66) advantage with just under 30 seconds left in the game, but the Warhawks (1-7) got to within one point (72-71) on a 3-point field goal by guard Fred Brown and back-to-back free throws from guard Charles Wineborne with 4.4 seconds remaining.
But the Bulldogs clinched the win when forward-center Romario Souza made a free throw with 3.6 seconds to go; the Warhawks got the basketball down court on the follow-up possession, but missed a short jump shot in the final second of play.
