James Robert Sumlin, Sr.

James Robert Sumlin, Sr. was born in Simsboro, Louisiana on Sept. 12, 1927 and passed away in Ruston August 20, 2011 at 83 years of age. He graduated from Simsboro High School and attended Louisiana Tech University and Centenary College. He was in the furniture upholstering business for over 50 years in Shreveport and Ruston.

Mr. Sumlin was the oldest living past Master of the Caddo Masonic Lodge, member of the Toastmasters’ Club of Shreveport, and past President of the Ruston Rotary Club. He enjoyed playing dominoes with his domino group and enjoyed working on machinery.

Mr. Sumlin was preceded in death by his parents Ruby Tabor Sumlin and James Roy Sumlin, his sister Reba Jean Sumlin Harrison, and brothers-in-law Wallace S. Harrison and Howard Sanderson.

Mr. Sumlin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Melba Boyd Sumlin, two daughters, Dianna Sumlin Stone (husband George)of Ruston, Carole Sumlin Sexton (husband Edison)of Baton Rouge, and son, James Robert Sumlin, Jr. (wife Janis)of Richardson, TX. He was very proud of his family, including his grandchildren Ashley Sexton Gordon (husband Chuck), Melissa Sexton (fiancé Wade), Andrew Sexton (wife Ashley), Lauren Stone Torrey (husband Scott), and Suzanna Stone Bailey (husband Doug). He is also survived by his sisters, Peggy Sumlin Tucker (husband Tuck) of Oregon, Barbara Sumlin Sanderson of Arcadia, and Judy Sumlin O’Rear of Ft. Worth, TX., and numerous neices and nephews.

Special thanks go to Dr. David Osafa, Dr. Tommy Smith, and Dr. Greg Tubre, the staffs at Princeton Place and North Louisiana Medical Center, and Professional Hospice Care.

The family has honored Robert Sumlin’s wishes to donate his body to L.S.U. Medical Center. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, 7200 Desiard St., Monroe, LA 71203.
